How to involve every Learner in class to take active part in the Lesson PLC
With large classes or smaller classes, you see students sleeping immediately you start teaching.
You are teaching not preaching, make it active and engaging.
Some teachers can talk 2 Hours non- stop. Its high time you change that.
The lesson is not about you, you are also not teaching yourself to understand better, you are just a guide in the classroom, guide them to learn.
You might know the principle or how to do something already, so preaching it becomes easy for you, but to the learners no.
You must make them think critically in each class section.
Engaging Strategies
You might have a way you do it that works, you can also add the following
To involve everyone, use strategies like, group work, peer teaching, games, inquiry base learning, Project, Fishbowl Strategy or inside outside circle.
Grouping strategies to involve all learners
Use mixed grouping, in grouping your learners consider GESI, Gender, emotion, social inclusion, subject, experience, background).
Break your lesson into task or Activities, Eg. trying to Teach Force and Motion.
ACT 1. explain force and motion to your group members,
ACT. 2, Effect of Force on a body.
ACT 3. Types of Force
ACT. 4 Meaning of Each type of Force.
ACT5. Formula and Calculation with work examples
in this case, you don’t go and preach this to them and get out, you let them search for it.
If for example you have about 6 Groups, Let Group 2 call someone in group 1 to provide answers to the first activity, and group 1 also select someone in group 2 to present. Same to other groups.
Upon doing this we realized no group wanted to be last so they ended up calling the weaker students in the other groups to give answers, by so doing, the groups were also seen seriously coaching the weaker ones among them that might be called, a situation were when you are teaching you might missed because of the size of the class.
You’ll be surprised, some even used the local language to explain concepts to their colleagues to understand better so that they do not become last.
Those who were not in talking terms even have to put their differences aside to work as a team to get results.
Try it.
You can also do it this way
Group leaners, ask them to perform a task, let a learner take a part like the introduction, another take the the body, the conclusion to another.
Try Fishbowl
Fish bowl approach ; leaners form two concentric circle, inner and outer . The small group will observe actively and the other groups outside will later learn from the inner groups , all groups must be in the class. learners have to pay extra attention because they are going to teach their colleagues. Even those the larger group didn’t take active part they were observing hence any wrong move later by their colleagues will be detected.
Saga Approach
The learner with experience or extra knowledge come to explain before the others add extra information
Use of Games;
There are many gaming strategies that can be used in class, check our article on Games that can be incorporated in class for effective learning.
Inquiry base learning
Let learners find solutions to problems rather than you always providing answers. They explore and discover new information through asking questions and investigating
There are many more engaging class strategies, which one do you use?
