Four members of the UK’s richest family have received prison sentences for exploiting staff brought over from India to work at their Geneva villa.

Prakash and Kamal Hinduja, as well as their son Ajay and his wife Namrata, were found guilty of exploitation and illegal employment by a Swiss court and handed sentences ranging from four to four-and-a-half years.

They were acquitted on the more serious charge of human trafficking.

Lawyers representing the defendants said they intend to appeal against the ruling.

Speaking outside the court, Robert Assael, the lawyer for the defendants, said: “I’m shocked. We’re going to fight it to the bitter end.”

Three workers who were brought over from their native India alleged the family paid them as little as £7 ($8) to work 18-hour days – less than a tenth of the amount required under Swiss law – and confiscated their passports.

They also claimed the family – whose fortune is estimated at around £37bn – rarely allowed them to leave the house, which is in Geneva’s wealthy neighbourhood of Cologny.

During the trial, prosecutors alleged the family spent more on their dog than on their servants.

The defence argued that the employees received ample benefits, were not kept in isolation and were free to leave the villa.

The employees “were grateful to the Hindujas for offering them a better life”, Mr Assael argued.

The elder Hindujas, both over 70, did not attend court proceedings, pleading ill health. Ajay and Namrata did attend court but were not there to hear the verdict.

Following the verdict, the prosecution requested an immediate detention order for the younger Hinduja couple, but this was denied by the judge.

The defence said Kamal Hindula is currently in hospital in Monaco – and the other three family members are at his bedside.

It is not the first time that Geneva, a hub for international organisations as well as the world’s wealthy, has been in the spotlight over the alleged mistreatment of servants.

Last year, four domestic workers from the Philippines launched a case against one of Geneva’s diplomatic missions to the United Nations, claiming they had not been paid for years.

The Hinduja family own the Hinduja Group, a multinational group with interests in oil, gas, and banking.

The family also owns Raffles hotel in London.

Apple is to be sued by a businessman after “deleted” messages he sent to s3x workers were found by his wife on another device.

The cheating husband, who is reportedly a middle-aged man from England, claims Apple’s lack of transparency over deleted messages led to his wife filing for divorce.

He told The Times he had turned to prostitutes in the final years of his marriage, and would contact them through the iMessage app on his iPhone before deleting the texts.

But the messages were eventually discovered by his wife on the family’s iMac computer, along with messages going back several years he believed he had wiped.

“If you are told a message is deleted, you are entitled to believe it’s deleted,” He told the Times newspaper.

“It’s all quite painful and quite raw still. It was a very brutal way of finding out [for my wife].

“My thoughts are if I had been able to talk to her rationally and she had not had such a brutal realisation of it, I might still be married.”

He added: “Divorce is an extraordinarily stressful process and you have children and family dynamics.

“In my opinion it’s all because Apple told me my messages were deleted when they weren’t.

“If the message had said, ‘These messages are deleted on this device’, that would have been a clue, or ‘These messages are deleted on this device only’ that would have been even better.”

He is now pursuing legal action against the company for the more than £5 million he lost in his divorce and legal costs, claiming the company does not make it clear to customers that deleted messages can appear on other Apple devices.

The Embassy or Consulate where you actually apply should be able to access your form using the barcode on your DS-160 confirmation page, which you must bring to the visa interview. For example, if a business traveler intends to apply for his visa at the U.S. Embassy in City X but then has an urgent reason to travel to City Y, he can schedule an appointment at the U.S. Consulate in City Y. The U.S. Consulate in City Y can access his DS-160 even though it lists the U.S. Embassy in City X as the intended submission location.

How can I save my application? Can I stop in the middle of the application and return to it later?

You can save your application or return to a partially completed application. When you begin a new DS-160, you will be issued a unique application ID number after selecting and answering a security question.
