Affordability Wahala: Your Loan Could be Cancelled if This Happens

Before taking any loan or making deductions from your salary, it’s important to know the rules. According to policy, loans or deductions from your salary must not exceed 40% of your total earnings. This 40% limit is called affordability.

However, some workers have found a way to bypass this limit. They first present a clean salary slip to the bank to take out a loan. Immediately after, they head to their union or institution for another loan, effectively increasing deductions to 80%. If the process backfires, they find themselves in a financial mess.

Unfortunately, recent changes in the Controller and Accountant General’s Department (CAGD) portal have created some complications. Affordability figures, which were stable in the past, now fluctuate without prior notice. This could significantly affect your loan application.

If you check your affordability at the beginning of the month and it looks high enough to qualify for a loan, it’s important to reconfirm later in the month. Even pray it remains stable by the time your loan application is processed!

It’s a bad decision to employ more teachers amid impasse – Clement Apaak tells GTEC

Deputy Ranking Member of Parliament’s Education Committee, Dr Clement Abas Apaak, has condemned the Ghana Tertiary Education Commission’s (GTEC) approach to resolving the Colleges of Education Teachers’ Association of Ghana’s (CETAG) two-month impasse.

According to him, GTEC should have been finding solutions to the strike rather than suggesting that they would employ more tutors.

As such, he condemned the government for taking such a step rather than negotiating with the teachers’ association.

“I think that this move is a very bad move, it ought to be withdrawn. Government must shower the needed resources to meet its obligation to the teachers and let them go back and teach,” he said on Joy FM’s Top Story on August 16.

He argued that even the decision to employ more teachers was bad because there is no budgetary allocation for employing more people.

“We know that we passed the 2024 budget, we have also seen the minister for Finance come with the Mid-year review budget, there are no allocations or estimations to cater for the recruitment of 2500 lecturers. This can not happen within the next two to three months. I can tell you that on authority.

“I am a lecturer. I have gone through the processes. The process itself of recruiting lecturers, it is not something you can do within two weeks or even a month. Clearly it is not feasible,” .

 

Early on Friday, GTEC said it has paid the top-up of the research allowance for 44 of the 46 Colleges of Education, except for McCoy and Dambai, which have some technical issues to be resolved.

The Commission also said it was currently in talks with “the Honourable Minister of Education for financial clearance to be granted to GTEC to recruit some two thousand five hundred (2500) teaching staff to augment the current load for academic work to commence as quickly as possible while we work with CETAG to resolve their concerns.”

But Dr Apaak stressed that this was a bad decision since GTEC, by its letter, is inferring that it was replacing CETAG. He argued that it was a misplaced priority.

On June 14, teachers in various colleges of education laid down their tools, demanding better working conditions and remuneration packages.

The Minister of Interior, Henry Quartey, has revealed that nearly 90,000 individuals have applied to join Ghana’s security services, following the closure of the recruitment portals on Tuesday, 13 August 2024.

The recruitment drive, which was announced by the Ghana Police Service, Ghana Prisons Service, and Ghana Immigration Service on 7 August 2024, saw a significant number of applicants who had previously expressed interest in joining these services in 2021.

Speaking to Joy News, Mr. Quartey provided an update on the recruitment process, highlighting the overwhelming response.

“As of two days ago, there were close to 90,000 applications. That is the report I received from the security agencies handling the recruitment,” he said.

However, Mr. Quartey noted that the number of available positions is limited. Parliament has approved a budget that allows for the recruitment of approximately 12,000 new personnel across the security services.

He emphasized that the agencies will need to apply their eligibility criteria rigorously to select qualified candidates from the large pool of applicants.

“All these 80,000 will be subject to the security agencies’ criteria to determine who qualifies for admission,” the Minister added, underscoring the competitive nature of the recruitment process.

“In fact, as at last two days, there were close to 90,000. That is the report that I had from the security agencies that was doing the recruitment,” he said in an interview on Joy News.

“But bear in mind that Parliament has approved a budget  so there is an intake that the agencies will have to do and I don’t think that its going to go beyond maybe 12,000 or so.

“So all this 80,000, its up to the security agencies to use their eligibility criteria to be able to select who qualifies to actually be admitted”.
