FWSC Yet to Conclude on Condition of Service for Teachers – Analysing the Effective Date of Payment

FWSC Yet to Conclude on Condition of Service for Teachers – Analyzing the Effective Date of Payment and Calls for Negotiations Starting 2022

Teachers in Ghana: When Will the New Conditions of Service Take Effect?

There’s a lot of discussion happening about the conditions of service for teachers in Ghana. The Fair Wages and Salaries Commission (FWSC) is still negotiating with the three teacher unions: GNAT, NAGRAT, and CCT-GH.

The latest update is that the National Labour Commission has given all parties until June to reach an agreement, the FWSC and the teacher Unions are yet to reach an Agreement. NAGRAT President, Angel Carbonu, has assured members that negotiations will be finalized within the next three weeks.

This is important because the teacher unions began pushing for a review of their collective agreement back in 2022.

Effective Date of Payment

Here’s where things get interesting. University teachers (UTAG) and College of Education teachers (CETAG) already finalized their conditions of service, and their effective date is indeed January 1st, 2024.

The Ghana Registered Nurses and Midwives Association  just finished their negotiations with the government too. But unlike the teachers, their effective date for new allowances is July 1st, 2024, not January 1st. The reason for this difference is unclear.

So, the big question remains: When will Ghanaian teachers see any new allowances they negotiate?

What do you think? Let’s discuss in the comments below!
