Ghanaian Teacher Appeals to President Mahama for National Uniform or Clothing Allowance
A young Ghanaian teacher has made a heartfelt appeal to former President John Dramani Mahama, urging him to introduce a national uniform for teachers or provide a clothing allowance to ease their financial burden.
In a TikTok video that has since gone viral, the teacher, identified as Jimmy, explained that many educators in Ghana struggle to maintain a decent wardrobe due to the high cost of clothing. He argued that a national uniform or a clothing allowance would help teachers save money and reduce the financial strain they face.

āI appealed to the previous government, but they didnāt listen. President Mahama, this is my humble plea: please introduce a national uniform for teachers. We are drowning in debt just trying to dress decently for work,ā Jimmy said in the video.
Jimmyās appeal was supported by a colleague who joined him in the video. However, the colleague suggested an alternative solution: a clothing allowance instead of a uniform.
āWe, the teachers, are bleeding financially because we spend so much on clothes. If the government could allocate even 10% of our basic salary as a clothing allowance, it would make a huge difference,ā the colleague added.

Mixed Reactions to the Appeal
The video sparked a wave of reactions on social media, with Ghanaians sharing diverse opinions on the matter.
- @Stephen Abban commented:
āA specific uniform for teachers might not be the best idea. Our dressing serves as a model for students, positively influencing their sense of style. A clothing allowance would be more practical.ā - @OheneAboagye shared:
āWhile your point is valid, there are more pressing issues in the education sector that need attention. Letās focus on elevating the Ghana Education Service (GES) to higher standards.ā - @Avatar wrote:
āPlease, donāt impose uniforms on anyone. A clothing allowance would be a better solution.ā - @Isaiah Quame Gyekye added:
āThis is part of the reason why some people donāt value the teaching profession. Uniforms? Really?ā - @Derrick humorously remarked:
āInstead of pushing for a clothing allowance, youāre asking for uniforms? Who will pay for them? Youāll still have to buy them yourself!ā
Some critics argued that introducing a national uniform might add to the challenges teachers already face, while others dismissed the idea entirely, emphasizing the need for more significant reforms in the education sector.
A Broader Conversation
Jimmyās appeal has ignited a broader conversation about the welfare of teachers in Ghana. While some support the idea of a uniform or allowance to alleviate financial pressure, others believe the focus should be on addressing systemic issues within the education system.
What are your thoughts? Should Ghana introduce a national uniform for teachers, or is a clothing allowance a better solution?
