One of the victims, identified only as Salifu, died instantly, while the other sustained critical gunshot wounds.

According to reports, the two had just returned from a DSTV viewing center, where they watched the UEFA Champions League match between Real Madrid and Atletico Madrid. While standing outside their residence discussing the game, gunmen on a motorbike approached, identified them, and opened fire at close range.

Police later arrived at the scene and transported the deceased’s body to the morgue. The injured student remains in critical condition.

Meanwhile, in a related incident, unknown gunmen attempted an attack on another Kusasi student in Gambaga two weeks ago, though it was unsuccessful.

The attacks are believed to be linked to the long-standing chieftaincy conflict in Bawku.

Ghanaian Teacher Appeals to President Mahama for National Uniform or Clothing Allowance

Ghanaian Teacher Appeals to President Mahama for National Uniform or Clothing Allowance

A young Ghanaian teacher has made a heartfelt appeal to former President John Dramani Mahama, urging him to introduce a national uniform for teachers or provide a clothing allowance to ease their financial burden.

In a TikTok video that has since gone viral, the teacher, identified as Jimmy, explained that many educators in Ghana struggle to maintain a decent wardrobe due to the high cost of clothing. He argued that a national uniform or a clothing allowance would help teachers save money and reduce the financial strain they face.

“I appealed to the previous government, but they didn’t listen. President Mahama, this is my humble plea: please introduce a national uniform for teachers. We are drowning in debt just trying to dress decently for work,” Jimmy said in the video.

Jimmy’s appeal was supported by a colleague who joined him in the video. However, the colleague suggested an alternative solution: a clothing allowance instead of a uniform.

“We, the teachers, are bleeding financially because we spend so much on clothes. If the government could allocate even 10% of our basic salary as a clothing allowance, it would make a huge difference,” the colleague added.

Mixed Reactions to the Appeal

The video sparked a wave of reactions on social media, with Ghanaians sharing diverse opinions on the matter.

  • @Stephen Abban commented:
“A specific uniform for teachers might not be the best idea. Our dressing serves as a model for students, positively influencing their sense of style. A clothing allowance would be more practical.”
  • @OheneAboagye shared:
“While your point is valid, there are more pressing issues in the education sector that need attention. Let’s focus on elevating the Ghana Education Service (GES) to higher standards.”
  • @Avatar wrote:
“Please, don’t impose uniforms on anyone. A clothing allowance would be a better solution.”
  • @Isaiah Quame Gyekye added:
“This is part of the reason why some people don’t value the teaching profession. Uniforms? Really?”
  • @Derrick humorously remarked:
“Instead of pushing for a clothing allowance, you’re asking for uniforms? Who will pay for them? You’ll still have to buy them yourself!”

Some critics argued that introducing a national uniform might add to the challenges teachers already face, while others dismissed the idea entirely, emphasizing the need for more significant reforms in the education sector.

A Broader Conversation

Jimmy’s appeal has ignited a broader conversation about the welfare of teachers in Ghana. While some support the idea of a uniform or allowance to alleviate financial pressure, others believe the focus should be on addressing systemic issues within the education system.

What are your thoughts? Should Ghana introduce a national uniform for teachers, or is a clothing allowance a better solution?

Deprived Areas (Schools) in Ghana to Receive 20% Allowance: What You Need to Know

Deprived Areas (Schools) in Ghana to Receive 20% Allowance: What You Need to Know

The Ghanaian government has announced its readiness to implement the Deprived Area Allowance, a move aimed at motivating teachers to accept postings to underserved areas. This initiative has sparked discussions on how these “deprived areas” will be identified and how the 20% allowance will be calculated.

Deprived Areas (Schools) in Ghana to Receive 20% Allowance: What You Need to Know

Follow us for the Latest Updates Click Here

In this blog post, we’ll explore how similar systems work in other countries, like Zambia, and provide a detailed breakdown of the identified deprived areas in Ghana. We’ll also discuss the challenges faced by teachers in urban areas and the government’s plans to address these issues.

How Teacher’s Rural and Remote Hardship Allowance is Calculated Elsewhere

A Look at Zambia’s System

In Zambia, the Ministry of General Education has a well-structured system for calculating Rural and Remote Hardship Allowances. Here’s a snapshot of how it works:

1. Rural and Remote Hardship Allowance

  • Rural Hardship Allowance: Paid to teachers serving in rural schools, categorized based on the school’s distance from the nearest district center.
    • Categories:
      • A: 30 to 70 km
      • B: 25 to 70 km
      • C: 20 to 70 km
      • D: 0 to 15 km
    • Rate: 20% of the monthly basic salary.
  • Remote Allowance: Paid to teachers in schools over 70 km (for categories A, B, and C) or over 15 km (for category D) from the nearest district center.
    • Rate: 25% of the monthly basic salary.

Note: Teachers cannot receive both the Rural Hardship Allowance and Remote Allowance simultaneously.

2. Accommodation Allowance

  • Teachers without institutional housing are eligible for an accommodation allowance based on their salary scale.

3. Responsibility Allowance

  • Paid at 20% of the basic salary to teachers with specific qualifications and responsibilities, such as degree holders teaching “A” level classes.

Note: The official classification document from the Ghana Education Service is yet to be released. The above list is based on preliminary identifications.

Challenges for Urban Teachers: Rent and Transport Allowances

While the 20% allowance is a welcome relief for teachers in deprived areas, those in urban areas are also advocating for rent and transport allowances. Teachers in cities often spend a significant portion of their salaries on high rent and transportation costs, which can be a financial burden.

The government has acknowledged these concerns, and President John Dramani Mahama has promised that no new school will be built without teacher accommodations. This initiative aims to address the accommodation challenges faced by teachers across the country.

The introduction of the Deprived Area Allowance is a significant step toward improving education in underserved communities in Ghana. By learning from systems like Zambia’s, the government can create a fair and effective framework for identifying deprived areas and calculating allowances.

However, it’s equally important to address the needs of teachers in urban areas, who face their own unique challenges. As the government works to finalize the official classification of deprived areas, stakeholders must continue to advocate for comprehensive solutions that benefit all teachers.
